Situated in a remote area just northwest of Galle, visitors take a culinary journey to experience the flavours of genuine Sri Lankan food. As dusk descends, visitors are taken to a lamp-lit mud hut by means of a typical tuk tuk. They are greeted with a refreshing drink and a cool towel. A vibrant display of ingredients demonstrates the many uses of roti, a mainstay of Sri Lankan cuisine. Guests are welcome to ask questions and even help make the local speciality, hoppers, as hosts prepare a feast. Under the crickets’ melodies, diners savour a home-style meal of roti and hoppers accompanied by carefully made curries of prawn, pig, and cuttlefish for a true experience of Sri Lanka.
What is Roti made of?
“Roti,” is a type of unleavened flatbread commonly consumed in South Asian countries, particularly in Sri Lanka. Roti is a staple food and is typically made from whole wheat flour, Coconut, water, and salt. Sometimes, oil or butter is added to enhance flavor and texture.
The preparation involves kneading the dough, dividing it into small portions, rolling each portion into a flat, round shape, and then cooking it on a hot griddle. Roti is often served as an accompaniment to various dishes like curries, vegetables, or lentils.
Is the Roti making process hard?
While the process itself is not overly complicated, achieving the right consistency and texture in the roti might take a bit of practice. but don’t worry that’s where the expertise of our host and the chef come in. The key is to get the dough to the right consistency, roll it evenly, and cook it on a hot surface to achieve the characteristic puffiness.
