Galle was once one of the most important stops on the Silk Road. During the second half of the last millennium, colonial powers came to claim the port and built a fort behind it to protect their prize. This fort with its sea-facing ramparts and heritage buildings is now a UNESCO-listed city where you can explore Sri Lanka’s history and shop local crafts.
