What is the significance of the Kandy city walk?

The Temple of the Tooth, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. It houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha, which is believed to bring blessings and protection to the country. Pilgrims from all over the world visit the temple to pay their respects and seek blessings. The city is set around a picturesque lake, offering beautiful views. Walking along the lake or exploring the surrounding hills provides a serene and visually pleasing experience.

Kandy is home to a diverse array of religious sites, including Buddhist temples, mosques, Hindu kovils, and Christian churches. This religious diversity reflects the city’s rich history of coexistence and tolerance among different faiths. It also adds depth and vibrancy to Kandy’s cultural landscape, making it a fascinating destination for visitors interested in exploring various religious traditions.

The main market in central Kandy is a bustling hub where locals gather to buy and sell a wide range of goods. Visitors can expect to find an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and handicrafts, offering a glimpse into daily life in Kandy. It’s also a great place to sample local snacks and interact with friendly vendors while immersing oneself in the vibrant atmosphere of the market.

The Temple of the Tooth was a spiritual highlight even though we didn’t go inside the temple. The break at the Empire Café provided a much-needed respite. Exploring the bustling central streets and the vibrant main market was a feast for the senses. Indeed, a cool experience for anyone looking to delve deep into the heart of Sri Lanka’s heritage.
